—PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a Naval Base at Oguta in Imo State.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

According to the statement, President Buhari in his Sallah message to Muslims and Nigerians in general, commemorating the Eid-el-Fitr, also highlighted on on the security situation in the country and his administration’s efforts at peace and security.

In what appears to be scoring his administration a pass mark in its way of tackling the various threats to the nation’s peace and security, the President said “after a period of fasting and reflection, this year, we have cause to welcome the occasion in hope”.

On the establishment of the new Naval Base, the statement said “the President approved the establishment of a Naval Base in Oguta, Imo State”.

The statement quoted the president as saying “the battle waged against terrorists who falsely masquerade under the name of Islam is approaching its conclusion.

“The fight has been long and hard. Final victory is within sight. Boko Haram and its offshoots’ final embers are now fading.

“Last month, the leader of ISWAP was killed in an airstrike. Since the New Year, thousands of fighters have surrendered to enter rehabilitation programmes. The territories they used to occupy are now seeing the return of those who were forced to flee their barbarity.

Normality is finally beginning to return to the Northeast. It is a long process. Yet it is one we are, together, now embarking upon.

“With the designation of bandit groups as terrorists, the challenges of banditry and kidnapping are being tackled differently in the North-western and North Central states where the latest military acquisitions and the Armed Forces are being fanned out across the region to thwart acts of terror.

“The administration is equally getting impressive reports of the special operations to curb crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering in the South-South, with millions of illegally refined products being impounded and illegal refineries destroyed.

“While we are making progress cleaning the environment, some evil people are busy causing more pollution and destruction.

‘‘In response to the disturbing rise in criminal attacks targeting law enforcement and public facilities in the South East, concerted military operations to rid the region of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) elements have, in recent weeks, led to the overrunning of IPOB/ESN bases, the seizure of weapons and the arrest of a large number of suspects”, he said.

Shiites of the  Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) have alleged that the police shot and killed their member and arrested 78 others in Zaria and Kaduna during their annual international Quds day commemoration.Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna, Engr. Yunusa. Lawal Musa, a member of IMN, said “the Rally/Procession took place in virtually all countries of the world including the United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Ghana, Niger Republic, and in Nigeria in several other states, without any intimidation or attack except only in Kaduna State (Kaduna and Zaria).“It is a well known annual event but Alas! On this fateful day Friday, 29″ April 2022, the procession in Kaduna was brutally attacked with live ammunition Gunshots and massive teargas, resulting in the cold-blood murder of one Mustafa Abubakar Wagini (28 years old) and seriously injuring 9 others. Eight people were arrested on their way back home and are now in detention with the police”

The man has been identified as Koyejo and he is said to have picked up his unnamed lover at Isolo while heading to his family house at Jakande Estate.

The married IT engineer who lives with his wife at Surulere, reportedly called his friends to tell them he was around and subsequently bought suya before parking at Double Star Junction to have some fun inside the car.

A source told the publication that they became curious after discovering that his vehicle with registration number EPE666GE, had been on from Saturday night to Sunday night and in the same spot.

The source said;

“By the time they put on their touch light, they saw it was Koyejo, our former guy. But we do not know who the girl was.

“It was this evening that we were told he went to pick the girl at Isolo. They bought suya at Moshalashi bus stop. One thing led to another and they started making love in the car.

“Nobody knows what killed them. Koyejo was naked while the girl only pulled her tight.

“One of the men in our zone called Koyejo”s wife who lives at Surulere. She said she had been unable to reach her husband since Saturday that his phone had been switched off.

“We had to contact policemen at Ejigbo who came to take them away with the car. Koyejo’s body had started peeling. The girl’s nose was bringing out blood.

“There was no injury on them. Ony the Police can tell what happened. They took them to Isolo General Hospital”

Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident, adding that only autopsy would reveal the cause of death.

Some workers in Kogi State have expressed their disappointment to the Kogi State Government as they celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Fitri without salary.

The workers, who had hoped to receive their salaries, had their expectations dashed, as there was no sign that their salary would be paid.

Speaking to DAILY POST on Monday, some workers described the development as wicked and heartless on the part of the present administration for allowing them to celebrate Sallah with empty stomach.

“After one month of Ramadan fast, look at us now, we are celebrating Sallah without a penny in our pocket. I can’t buy a single cup of garri for my family to feed this festive season.

“We all thought the Governor will do the needful, most especially now that he is eyeing the number one sit in Nigeria. But look at Kogi workers now, nothing to write home about. We are now beggars. What a shameful time for us all to experience this hardship under the present administration,” a civil servant Abduallhi lamented.

Another civil servant, who never wanted his name to be mentioned said, “This is the worst Sallah I will be experiencing in my life. No food, nothing. The cost of food stuff in the market is very high and if you go out there to buy some food stuff, you will come back home with little.

“If the Governor had paid us our salary, the suffering would have reduced. I heard the Government will pay after Sallah. To me, it is medicine after death.”

A widow with seven children, who has been working with the Kogi State Civil Service also said, “Why is it that they enjoy inflicting pains on the poor masses? I am a wiidow with seven children. I don’t know what to do.

“My salary is in percentage. I am no longer complaining because that is where we have found ourselves. They should pay me my percentage salary. I heard our Governor bought APC nomination form for N100m. That money will go a long way in feeding many Kogi workers during this Sallah. But look at us, we are suffering and smiling with empty stomach”.

All efforts to get across to any of the relevant State Government officials, on phone, for comment proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.

DAILY POST recalls that Governor Yahaya Bello, in his Workers’ Day speech on May 1st, 2022, kept mum on when April Salary will be paid to workers in Kogi State.

Rather, the Governor said “We are doing our best to overcome the percentage salary payments which currently persist at Local Government levels and which is traceable to the challenges associated with the collision between low government inflow and a heavy wage-bill”

Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is reportedly heading to the Court of Appeal to challenge the amended seven charges on terrorism approved by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In the copy of court processes obtained by newsmen on Monday May 2, it was revealed that the IPOB leader is challenging the court’s final decision to retain counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15.

In their application at the federal high court, Kanu’s lawyers which include Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Ifeanyi Ejiofor had insisted that the charges against him are legally defective.

Ozekhome who noted that his client was “unlawfully, brutally and extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya without his consent”, also argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try him on the strength of an incompetent

He also said that the charges against Kanu were purportedly committed outside the country, and the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the charge.

Ozekhome said;

“The charges appears to give this court a global jurisdiction over offences that were allegedly committed by the defendant, without specifying the location or date the said offences were committed”

He also averred that under the Federal High Court Act, the location where the offence was committed must be disclosed.

Punch reported that in the suit filed at the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal by Ozekhome and Ejiofor, it was stated that the trial Judge erred in law by failing to “consider, make finding of facts and accordingly pronounce on issue one raised for the trial court’s determination, relating to the extraordinary rendition of the appellant, and thereby occasioned a miscarriage of justice.”

Kanu is now seeking for;

“An order of this Honourable court allowing the appeal and setting aside in its entirety, the ruling/final decision of the learned trial court, retaining counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 of the amended charge.

“An order of this Honourable court upon granting relief a above, dismissing the remaining counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 and, accordingly discharging the appellant on those counts.

“An order of this Honourable court terminating the entire charge and discharging the appellant.

“And for such further order or orders as the Honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of this appeal.”

Vladimir Putin’s top military commander has been flown out of the war zone with shrapnel wounds after being to sent to Ukraine by the Russian president to secure victory, a former Russian internal affairs minister has claimed.

Valery Gerasimov, the chief of staff of the Russian army, was today wounded in Izium in Ukraine’s Kharviv region, which has been at the centre of intense fighting since Russia’s invasion.

Putin had sent Gerasimov to the region to take personal control of his push to grab territory in eastern Ukraine, after the Russian army abandoned its plans to take Kyiv at the end of March in favour of a concentrated assault on the Donbas region of Donetsk and Luhansk.

An unofficial Russian source reported that Gerasimov sustained ‘a shrapnel wound in the upper third of the right leg without a bone fracture.

‘The shard was removed – there is no danger to life,’ he said.

But Gerasimov’s injury was severe enough to have him flown away from the frontlines and back to Russia to undergo further treatment, marking another embarrassing defeat for Putin’s forces.

The chief of staff’s injury came just one day after Russian Major General Andrei Simonov, 55, was killed in Kharkiv, according to an adviser to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

He is Russia’s ninth general to have been killed since the start of the invasion.

Ukrainian interior ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko said the precision strike on Izium was ‘the very place where…Gerasimov, who personally came to lead the attack on Slavyansk, was located’.

A ‘large number’ of senior officers were killed in the attack which wounded Gerasimov, Gerashchenko said.

Pro-Ukrainian Telegram channel Vertikal also alleged Gerasimov had been ‘wounded near Izium’, citing unspecified sources.

‘Our source reports that his legs and hips are damaged,’ Vertikal said.

It suggested that three of Gerasimov’s entourage had been killed before he was evacuated.

Russia is believed to have sustained heavy casualties in the eastern Donbas region and around cities Kharkiv and Izium, as Ukraine’s armed forces continue their bitter defence of the Donetsk and Luhansk territories which have been partially occupied by Moscow-backed separatists since 2014.

Russia’s military leaders are pouring troops and equipment into the east of Ukraine in an attempt to force a bloody victory after they abandoned plans to blitz through Ukraine’s north and seize Kyiv earlier in the war.

Britain’s ministry of defence yesterday said Putin’s troops in the east are still struggling to make ground despite the renewed support, citing poor tactics and the deployment of low-skilled troops as reasons for the slow progress.

‘Shortcomings in Russian tactical coordination remain. A lack of unit-level skills and inconsistent air support have left Russia unable to fully leverage its combat mass, despite localised improvements,’ the MoD tweeted.

‘Russia hopes to rectify issues that have previously constrained its invasion by geographically concentrating

The Nigerian Army,  says members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are using pictures of fake soldiers arrested by Nigerian army troops recently to malign the institution.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said that one Solomon Okafor of Radio Biafra London had been peddling malicious disinformation and falsehood on social media, alleging complicity by troops in a fictitious case of the kidnapping of a family of 10 in Kaduna State.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, Chief Joe Igbokwe has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, sponsored the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in 2015 after losing election.

Igbokwe, in a post on Facebook, said the solution to the insecurity in the zone was for stakeholders to visit President Buhari and seek for improved security in the zone.

He, however, stated that he has paid his own price to the insecurity in the zone, through the burning of his house in Nnewi last year.

“President Buhari won elections in 2015 and IPOB, a branch of PDP took to the streets to vent their anger, stupidity and frustrations. Our leaders: the intelligentsia, Governors, Law Makers, University Dons, Bishops, Traditional Rulers, Business Moguls, Chieftains of Industries, Men of Issachar, the vibrant and useful Youths, and all other stakeholders in the South East looked the other way thinking that blackmail, morbid silence, and unconcerned attitudes will help. It did not. It ended in disaster, frustrations and deaths.

”The one million containers of hate and bigotry we deliberately imported into South East have berthed quietly and neatly too in Igboland. We are offloading the goods into various warehouses across Igboland. They are selling like hot cakes and everybody is receiving his or her own share of the goods.

“I received mine on Sunday, October 3rd 2021 in Uruagu Nnewi. President General Ohaneze Worldwide Prof George Obiozor received his own too( please know this and have inner peace: an attack on OHANEZE President General is an attack on all Igbo anywhere in the world). Akunyili Family received theirs too. The late Chu Okongwu family in Nnewi received theirs too. Governor Hope Uzodinma received his containers too. Police personnels, police formations, INEC offices, LGAs etc were not left out in the distribution of the largesse. I can go on and on.”

Igbokwe said to reclaim the South East, there are two ways to go about it, one of which was to approach Buhari and seek for improved security in the zone.

“Every man in Igboland must stand up and chase these bandits and criminals out of Igboland and take back our South East, the land of the rising sun. Nobody has a monopoly of violence. Force respects force. The language these bandits or Boko Haram of South East will understand now is dialogue on an equal basis.

“Option two is for all the stakeholders I listed above to visit the President in Abuja and request for security to protect lives and property,” he said.

He said the situation in Igboland today demands that every man in Igboland has a duty to do.

He said Igboland expects every man to stand up and do his duty to the land.

“I have done my duty to Igboland. Do yours now or we lose everything to criminals and bandits,” Igbokwe said

CHANGE THEIR WORLD. CHANGE YOURS. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
