A Minna High Court No 3, has sentenced three Fulani herders to death by hanging over alleged armed robbery, culpable homicide, rape, among other heinous offences in the state.

The suspects included Mohammed Ibrahim Soja, Sani Idris Boka, and Babangida Gido.

They were arraigned and found guilty on ten-count charge of armed robbery, culpable homicide, rape, among other heinous offences in the state brought against them by men of the Niger State Police command.

In December 2015, the trio were said to have robbed one Josephine Monday, while armed with guns, cutlasses, knives and sticks of the sum of over N1 million cash, recharge cards value at about N20,000 and her husband’s N58,000 given to her for safe keeping at Waugu village in Shiroro Local Government area of Niger State.

The presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed, while delivering his judgement, stated that the evidences and prosecuting witnesses in the case have been “so consistent and explainative, even as the evidence of prosecuting witness is believable.”

He said, “Accordingly, I hold that all the ingredients of the offences of rape, attempt to commit culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt and armed robbery have been proved against the convicts beyond reasonable doubt.

“As such they have been sentenced to death by hanging, life imprisonment for the offence of rape and ten years imprisonment for causing grievous hurt and all the sentences to run consecutively”.

The senator representing the Ondo South, Nicholas Tofowomo, has expressed sadness over the alleged inability of the Senate to remove the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), following the insecurity and other challenges facing the nation .

This is as he noted that the Senate should have impeached Buhari two years ago.

He stated this in a chat with our correspondent in Akure, the state capital, on Friday.

Tofowomo declared that there was a need for the country to be saved from imminent total collapse, saying that the Buhari-led had failed totally due to its inability to address any of the challenges of the nation.

The senator said, “Look at us in the National Assembly now. We are leaving in seven months and we are now demonstrating. Does it make sense?

“Because I am part of them, I have to join them. If you look at it genuinely, we should have done this two years ago. It is very sad.

“In Abuja now, everybody is hiding. If you go to malls now, they are just like ghost towns. Even the National Assembly, everywhere is dry. Everybody has run away. Even the APC senators are angry.

“The naira is falling every second. Internal security is gone. What is honourable is for Buhari to just resign. But the minister is telling us that what we are doing is babyish.

“It is very unfortunate because our future is not bright. In the law school Abuja now, they are hiding. Boko Haram has been to the school two times. The country has collapsed.

“You know we have a closed session on Thursday. Majority of those in the session are for Buhari to be impeached, including members of the APC.

“I suggested that Buhari should be summoned to the National Assembly to come and give an account of the Nigeria security and if he doesn’t come, we should impeach him.

This is what we should have done two years ago but Buhari has already pocketed the senate. If not, his minister would not be saying that against us.”

Tofowomo also suggested that one of the ways to improve the internal security system was by strengthening the police, adding that the Nigerian police are poor.

Two women have been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a baby boy in Ogun State.

DAILY POST learnt the two women were nabbed by men of the Ogun state Police Command on July 25.

It was gathered that one of the suspects, 53-year-old Chinyere Nwozu, was seen with the crying one week old baby at about 9 am of the said date.

As she could not breastfeed the crying baby as a mother, members of the public became suspicious and they immediately alerted the police at Sango Ota divisional headquarters.

“Upon the information, the DPO of Sango Ota, SP Dahiru Saleh, detailed his detectives to the scene where the woman was promptly arrested,” Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemisaid on Saturday.

According to Oyeyemi, the arrested Nwozu had confessed during interrogation that “she is not the biological mother of the child; but that she bought the child somewhere in Agege area of Lagos state through one Ngozi Akaeme at the rate of 500,000 naira.”

Upon her confession, DAILY POST learnt that detectives went after the said Ngozi Akaeme and got her arrested.

Akaeme reportedly told the police that she was an accomplice to Chinyere Nwozu, adding that “she actually negotiated with the biological mother of the baby who agreed to sell the baby.”

Oyeyemi said efforts to make Akaeme accompany the cops to locate where the biological mother of the baby is, proved abortive.

He explained further that the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the two suspects should be transferred to the State CIID for further investigation and possible prosecution

Cocaine worth £40m has been discovered smuggled within a batch of bananas at a port on the Thames.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said officers seized more than half a tonne of the Class A drug on a boat travelling from Colombia, at London Gateway on the Essex coast, south-east England.

Investigators intercepted the shipment, which had been en route to the Netherlands, on Tuesday.

Hundreds of huge cocaine slabs were found wedged alongside bananas in cardboard boxes.

The NCA said the haul would have had a UK street value of more than £40m once cut and sold.

NCA branch operations manager, Adam Berry, described the discovery as a “huge blow” to the peddlers.

He said: “Taking out a consignment of this size will have been a huge blow to the criminal network involved in this shipment, preventing them from making millions of pounds that would have been invested in further criminality.

“Class A drugs are pedalled by gangs involved in violence and exploitation in our communities.

“The NCA works hard with partners to stop drugs getting that far, and making seizures like this demonstrate how we can break that link between international drug cartels and street-level dealers.”

In a later written to avaition from the the Emirate council states that they have reduced the flight from Nigeria to United Arab Emirates from 11 to 7.

22. July, 2022

Honourable Minister of Aviation
Federal Ministry of Aviation
Annex 3, Federal Secretarial Complex
Shehu Shagari Way
Maitama, Abuja
Nigeria

Your Excellency,
Greetings from Dubai. We trust this letter finds you well.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of planned reductions in Emirates’ operations to Nigeria. With effect from 15 August 2022, Emirates will be forced to reduce flights frorn Dubai to Lagos from 11 per week to 7 per week. We have had no choice but to take this action, to mitigate the continued losses Emirates is experiencing as a result of funds being blocked in Nigeria.

As of July 2022, Emirates has US$ 85 million of funds awaiting repatriation from Nigeria. This figure has been rising by more than $US 10 million every month, as the ongoing operational costs of our 11 weekly flights to Lagos and 5 to Abuja continue to accumulate.

These funds are urgently needed to meet our operational costs and maintain the commercial viability of our services to Nigeria. We simply cannot continue to operate at the current level in the face of mounting losses, especially in the challenging post COVID-19 climate. Emirates did try to stem the losses by proposing to pay for fuel in Nigeria in Nairas, which would have at least reduced one element of our ongoing costs, however this request was denied by the supplier. This means that not only are Emirates’ revenues accumulating, we also have to send hard currency into Nigeria to sustain our own operation. Meanwhile our revenues are out of reach and not even earning credit interest.

Your Excellency, this is not a decision we have taken lightly. Indeed, we have made every effort to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find a solution to this issue. Our Senior Vice-President met with the Deputy Governor of the CBN in May and followed spot the meeting by letter to the Governor himself the following month, however no positive response was received. Meetings were also held with Emirates’ own bank in Nigeria and in collaboration with IATA to discuss improving FX allocation, but with limited success.

Despite our considerable efforts, the situation continues to deteriorate. We are now in the unfortunate position of having to cut flights, to mitigate against further losses going forward.

While we appreciate that this issue is primarily a financial one, any support you could kindly provide would be warmly welcomed by Esthetes. We are confident that your valuable involvement would make a real difference in improving this very difficult situation.

Should there be any positive development in the coming days, we will of course re-evaluate this decision. Meanwhile thank you for your understanding and please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss the matter further.

Yours sincerely,
Sheikh Majid Al Mualla

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has backed the impeachment threat issued against President Muhammadu Buhari over widespread insecurity across the country.

Recall that some members of the national assembly issued a six-week ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari to step up the fight against insecurity or risk being impeached.

Ortom who supported the lawmakers’ action, said it’s long overdue. His Chief Press Secretary Nath Ikyur disclosed that he gave the commendation on Friday July 29, when he received a delegation of some members of the National Assembly led by Aduda who came to brief him.

The Benue Governor described the threat of the Senate and the House of Representatives PDP caucuses to impeach the President as “patriotic” and particularly commended some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC who have opted to do the ‘right thing’.

Ortom stressed that Buhari has performed far below expectations of Nigerians in solving both the security and economic challenges of the nation

“An hour later, he asked if I could allow him to charge his phone in my car so I gave him my car keys to proceed, and he went into the car and pretended to be charging his phone.

“A few minutes later, a guest came into the service apartment that I manage, wanting to pay an outstanding fee and asked if I had a cryptocurrency account so that he could pay through that means, and I told him that I had none. So I asked Daniel whether he has the means to receive payment through Bitcoin, and he said he does and accepted to help receive the payment on my behalf. Officers of the Ijeshatedo police station have apprehended three Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) staff for conspiring with a parish priest of St Brigigs Catholic Church, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, to create an illegal permanent voter’s card registration unit in the church auditorium for members.

The INEC staff including Mrs Rita, Mr Ikechukwu Izuchukwu and Miss Agbokhna Ebigun, were arrested following a complaint by the Chairman, Residents Association, Raji Azeem, to the police about ploys by the church to disenfranchise some members of the public.

According to Azeem, residents have waited to no avail at the INEC recognised registration centre only to discover that electoral officers have been camped at Catholic Church hall attending to members of the church.

He said, “The INEC registration officers, according to INEC provision should be stationed at 9A, Imam Thanni but this was not to be. We have been here awaiting their arrival but when we discovered that they were not forthcoming, we were worried.

Only for us to discover that they have been camped at the St Brigigs Catholic Church auditorium on the influence of the parish priest registering only members of the church while we were in the queue waiting. It was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise us.

The House 9A Imam Thanni registration centre has remained a constant polling unit since 1983. But the priest decided to play the religious cards by inducing the electoral officers to register only his church members.

The church members have been around since 5 am but we were unaware of their plan until we busted them in action and handed them over to the police at the Ijeshatedo police station. The arrested INEC officers have been crying and begging for their misdeeds.

But they were granted bail by the IPO, Inspector Shola so that they can continue with the registration. He instructed them to return after the exercise and that they should discontinue the exercise at the church hall and move to the venue approved by INEC.”

Another resident, Omolabake Ishola, said the news that political thugs invaded the venue of the registration exercise is false.
According to her, the media platforms are deliberately distorting the truth of the matter.

According to her, “There were no thugs at the registering venue contrary to what is being reported by some media houses. The fact of the matter is that the INEC officers have been compromised and they decided to register only members of the Catholic Church while other residents were left out.
